Katie Clapham – Worldswalker Photography
Katie Clapham has been a photographer for over 35 years, finding beauty and stories in the world she sees. She has traveled extensively to seek them out, so much so that her artistic name is Worldswalker. Her interest is most caught by the boundaries between earth and sky, dark and light, real and unreal. Her landscapes have the goddess rising from them, and her nudes have been likened to landscapes. Enthralled by the natural world, she does her best to share the enchantment of it with you.
Transition was captured standing thigh-deep in the ocean, on stairs that went further into the deep. Stairways are all about liminal space… The contrast between dark and light, low and high, old and new, known and unknown are all present. At this time of year, imagine going into the old, places, dark and unknown, but taking a last look at the day and the light. The square frame of stairway walls provide a doorway, a threshold between above and below.
Different people see this image differently… some imagine a “stairway to heaven”, some the transitions in their own lives, or the things they are striving for… yet a stairway that goes up, also goes down. This particular stairway descends further than the eyes can see, and the mystery of that is the intent for this image. The light at the top hides what awaits there, just as much as the murky waters behind hide the depths.
Fire Reflections was taken at the dark of the year. Flame inside of flame, candle flame reflected within and around the hearthfire. Fire can be one of the doorways into other realms-- in scrying, in ritual, or informally, staring into candles or campfires. There always seems to be something, just beyond the movement, just through the flame.
Stag evokes the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, with the quiet music and soft sound of horn against horn, echoing in the night. It is the God, aglow with flame, lighting our way. It is the mystery of fire in the dark, all else obscuring in shadow.
